Let’s talk about Smart Phone Privacy

Smart Phones and Privacy might be considered an oxymoron – a contradiction in terms – and anyone who tells you otherwise is well… selling something. No surprise there but with all the focus on Google, Facebook, Amazon, and other “apps” monitoring you all the time, many of us forget the basics. Edward Snowden takes a minute to remind us of the fact that your Smart Phone is anything but private at the most basic level.

Why isn’t your smart phone private? Because no matter where you go or what you do, it is broadcasting your unique identity to a global telecommunications network of cellular towers capable of triangulating your location without ever accessing GPS. Edward Snowden points out that all call data, tower network access data, phone calls, and meta-data now persist forever.  Remember that one company serving as the bottleneck for your interactions with another company is how the NSA Scandal broke in the first place.
